Other Underwear and Plastic Pants

Sanitary Wear

We start with sanitary wear, but before we look at the actual types of underwear it must be remembered that woman have had to deal with menstruation throughout history.  In the very early days and certainly up until the very late 1800's and into the 1900's (when the first commercial sanitary towels came on the market) most women just used strips of old material, but over the years this changed to absorbent towels with a belt.  The towels were disposable and had loops to fix them to the actual belt.  From this evolved panties with either built in pad loops or pouches in the crotch to hold the Sanitary Pads (or towels). These remained the standard type of sanitary wear up until well into the 1950's and even into the 1960's for some women.  Since then modern sanitary pads have virtually taken over and special panties are no longer necessary.

Since the earliest times of just using a sanitary belt with attached disposable towel (pad or napkin) various forms of protective underwear have been developed.  The earliest were ordinary panties with belt hooks attached which allowed a tampon or towel to be inserted.  These were satisfactory, but if the woman had a heavy period then blood could soak right through and get on the crotch of the underwear.  The next stage of development were panties with a plastic covered crotch and gusset area to save any soiling of the underwear, they still retained the loops or hooks to attach the towel but in all other respects looked very similar to ordinary panties.

These panties evolved over time to cater for the newer and more modern tampons (pads) which had their own integrated waterproofed layer.  This type of panty had pouches sewn in to the crotch area where the pads could be inserted and worn in comfort and ultimately cut down on the bulkiness of the older towel.  These panties came into production in the mid 1960's and have been in use right up to the late 1990's and even into the early 2000's.

Nowadays modern sanitary pads are thin self adhesive pads with a highly absorbent layer over a plasticised base.  They also now have side wings to make them much easier to attach to the crotch of any ordinary panty - therefore doing away with the necessity of specialised panties to hold them in place.
